Last year I attended the Chicago Quantum Summit virtually due to travel availability making this year is my first opportunity to attend in person. While my perspective is likely to be slighly affected by jet-lag as I traveled to Chicago from a Chicago Booth class week in Hong Kong yesterday, I intend to share as much insight gained as possible here throughout the next few days.
The day started off with an excellent breakfast and conversations with strangers. The friendly people I encountered this morning were in legal and insurance industries attending the summit for expansion of professional knowledge and quantum industry network growth.
After breakfast I moved into the Hall, sitting second row - right (as I do in all venues of learning when possible) and encountered several other pleasant visitors as we joked about sitting in the front... but not too front. I also met a Chicago Booth alum that is active in the Alchemist Chicago as a mentor to a new cohort member.
The Hall filled and then Chicago Quantum Exchange Director David Awschalom quieted the room to boast double last year's attendance and introduce a special introductory speaker - Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker! Pritzker knows how to liven up a crowd, be humble in his science, and promote the Great State of Illinois, such a pleasure to see him speak for the second time in recent weeks.
Side Note: It is the investment in quantum infrastructure, education, and commitment to production that has recruited ME to Chicago, Illinois this year.
Next, Paul Alivistatos, President of the University of Chicago, spoke the importance of maintaining and reinforcing the collaborative learning, growing, and producing that has been emerging across universities, scientists, and industries. He highliged the progress of emerging public companies this past year, and how that growth has spurned a wider need and interest in knowledge about quantum. Then he spoke of quantum education as a growing sector for all levels as we begin to require skilled resources across the quantum industry.
After welcomes were over, Cathy Foley, Australia's Former Chief Scientist, took the podium and educated us on where Austrailia is in quantum infrastructure projects, organization, and growth. She too is promoting recruitment with quantum infrastructure to entice development in their states. The level of information and preparation rigor for her presentation (including a touch or two of humor) was exceptional. Foley is an unquantifiable asset to Austrailia's quantum initiative.
To be continued... Soon I will write about the morning track sessions, lunch, and Paul Dabbar, Deputy Secretary, US Department of Commerce...
Coming Soon!
